Fifty years is a milestone in its own right, whether a birthday or an anniversary. For Lifeline Canada, it is a testament to our commitment to serving our community with care, support, and modern technology. Since the invention of medical alert systems, seemingly countless seniors and those living with mobility concerns have adopted these devices into their lives. We are proud to be a part of their journeys, past, present, and future.
In 2024, we will continue to push forward on advancements in our devices without losing sight of the peace of mind we bring to seniors, caregivers, and loved ones. With that said, let’s take a look at our impact and enduring influence on the lives of Canadians:
Origins of Lifeline: Pioneering Support for Seniors
As Lifeline Canada celebrates half a century of service, it’s fitting to revisit the humble beginnings that set the foundation for our journey of innovation and compassion.
Lifeline was born out of a desire to address the pressing need for reliable support for seniors living independently. In 1972, Dr. Andrew Dibner, a pioneering gerontologist, posed the question: What would an older person do if they needed help but were alone? Surely, they would call for help, but how could it be certain that help would come?
Motivated by these concerns, Dr. Dibner, along with his wife Susan, a sociologist, sought to create a groundbreaking solution. Their collaboration led to the development of a personal emergency response system. By 1974, their vision became a reality with the founding of Lifeline Systems, Inc.
Committed to empowering older adults and supporting their independence, the Dibners introduced Lifeline Systems to the world. By the late 1970s, their dedication expanded Lifeline’s reach to hospitals and healthcare organizations throughout the United States and Canada.
The company went public in 1983. This pivotal moment provided the resources needed to fuel further advancements in technology and service. Notably, Lifeline introduced waterproof personal alert buttons, a groundbreaking innovation that allows users to seek help even in the shower or bath—a common area for falls.
In 2010, Lifeline pioneered yet another industry advancement with the introduction of automatic fall detection technology. This cutting-edge feature automatically detects falls and ensures that, even if the user cannot speak, they are connected to the response centre so emergency assistance can be dispatched promptly.
Addressing a Critical Need
One of the primary use cases of Lifeline technology is to mitigate serious conditions and side effects associated with falls. While these devices cannot prevent incidents from happening, they can ensure the individual receives the help they need promptly. Falls remain a serious concern for seniors, with an estimated 20 to 30% of the senior population falling each year in Canada. They are also the leading cause of hospitalizations for this age group.
Empowering Seniors
For many seniors, maintaining independence is a deeply held value. Lifeline Canada’s products are not simply about providing emergency assistance; they are about preserving dignity and enabling seniors to continue living life on their own terms.
Whether it’s enjoying a stroll in the park or simply relaxing at home, our devices offer reassurance to over 700,000 Canadians that help is always within reach, empowering seniors to embrace each day with confidence.
Supporting Caregivers
The role of caregivers is one of immense love and dedication, but it can also be fraught with worry and stress. Before Lifeline Canada, many caregivers lived with the constant fear that their loved one might face a medical emergency when they were not present.
We are proud to say that our devices transformed this dynamic by providing caregivers with a reliable safety net, allowing them to breathe a little easier knowing that their loved one has access to immediate assistance at the touch of a button.
Continued Importance of Lifeline Canada
In 2023, it was estimated that individuals over the age of 65 made up nearly 19% of Canada’s population. That percentage is expected to grow significantly in the coming years as many baby boomers reach retirement age. As a result, it is critical that there is technology in place to support this aging population. At Lifeline Canada, we are proud to be a part of that solution.
Since our inception 50 years ago, we have supported seemingly countless individuals, both directly and indirectly, with our services. Here is a breakdown of those numbers:
- Over 1,500,000 help button presses
- More than 154,000 emergency services dispatched
- Over 55,000 emergencies
- More than 10,000 falls detected
Staying Relevant in Changing Times
Lifeline Canada’s products are adapting to meet the changing needs of users, ensuring that they receive the highest level of protection possible. This includes:
- Features like fall detection, wearable devices, and GPS tracking to enhance convenience.
- Supporting more than 240 languages at our response centre in Toronto through our third-party provider.
- Keeping an eye on new technology and adapting to integrate it into our systems.

As seniors navigate the journey of aging, Lifeline Canada has emerged as a trusted companion, offering support and security every step of the way. By seamlessly integrating our devices into their everyday lives, many seniors and those living with mobility concerns have come to see Lifeline Canada as an important part of their healthcare regime. This reduces the stigma associated with medical alert devices, reimagining them as a product that promotes graceful aging and continued vitality.
